Tampa Bay is not the HVHZ, and that changes what goes in your wall

This is the difference worth understanding before you read a single quote. The High Velocity Hurricane Zone — the strictest wind-borne debris regime in the country — covers Miami-Dade and Broward counties, and nothing else. Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco all sit well outside it.

In practice that means impact products here qualify under statewide Florida Product Approval rather than requiring a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance. The approved range is wider and the same level of protection generally costs less than it does in Miami. It does not mean the standard is looser: the design pressure is still calculated for your opening, on your elevation, at your address, and the approval documentation still goes in with the permit. A quote listing one design pressure for a whole house has not been engineered opening by opening, wherever in Florida it was written.

Gulf exposure, and what it does to the specification

A waterfront elevation with a long clear fetch across open water is calculated to a considerably higher design pressure than an inland one a few miles away, and the product has to match it. That is as true on Tampa Bay and the Gulf as it is on the Atlantic. Salt behaves the same way too: it reaches hinges, rollers, tracks and fixings long before it affects laminated glass, so marine-grade fittings near the water are the correct specification rather than an upsell. On any property, the rear elevation with the big sliders is usually both the largest opening and the most heavily loaded, which is where the specification has to be strongest.

What the insurance credit is worth

The mechanism is statewide and identical to South Florida. After the work is finished and the permit closed, a licensed inspector completes the OIR-B1-1802 wind mitigation form, and the opening protection section is the part your impact windows change. It is assessed across your whole building envelope, so every glazed opening — windows, doors and any skylights — has to be protected to reach the full credit.
